Chief Medical Officer

C-Suite Partners is delighted to partner with St John of God Health Care, one of the largest not-for-profit healthcare providers in Australia, to appoint a new Chief Medical Officer, based either at the Head Office in Perth, WA or Melbourne, VIC.

St John of God Health Care is one of the largest Catholic providers of health care services in Australia. The founding organisation was established in 1895 by the Sisters of St John of God, and is now a not-for-profit private health care group, employing more than 16,000 staff across Australia and New Zealand. It operates 26 facilities comprising more than 3,300 hospital beds, as well as home nursing, disability services and social outreach programs.

Reporting into the Group Chief Executive Officer, you will be responsible for providing high level strategic leadership in clinical excellence and clinical governance to ensure outstanding patient care and patient safety throughout the organisation. Additionally, the Chief Medical Officer will provide strong and inclusive leadership, as a key member of the Executive Leadership team.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Strategic oversight of clinical governance matters including patient safety, quality of care, clinical excellence, incident management and medico-legal matters.
  • Lead organisation-wide patient safety and clinical excellence through the design and implementation of a clinical governance framework.
  • Implement organisational patient safety and clinical excellence improvement plans based on evidence and best practice.
  • Actively participate in the development of clinical information systems, analytics, and technology required in the clinical setting to enable the organisation to achieve its strategy of being the leading healthcare provider in Australia.
  • Provide expert advice to the Group CEO, Hospital CEOs and Directors of Medical Services on all medical services and clinical governance matters.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on clinical performance, quality and patient safety trends, risks and outcomes to the Board’s Patient Safety and Clinical Excellence Committee, Executive Committee and other committees/groups as required.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders including VMOs, government agencies, private health funds, industry and regulatory bodies, universities and the communities they serve.
  • Provide advice to Hospitals and Social Outreach Services in the pursuit of compliance with the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and ongoing Accreditation.
  • Promote the organisation in the community through media, personal presentations and participation in key forums.
Key Requirements:
  • Medical degree and registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Demonstrated experience as a senior clinical leader in the areas of clinical governance at an organisation-wide level including credentialing, scope of practice, clinical indicator management and safety and quality programs.
  • Experience in managing and leading teams, including medical, nursing and administrative professionals.
  • Significant experience in leading quality improvement initiatives based on data analysis, trends, risk, and service requirements.
  • Proven track record as an effective healthcare senior executive who develops and meets strategic and operational objectives, influences change and gains participation at a strategic level.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
